Birds and other wildlife of the pristine eastern Himalayas: Incredible Bhutan

20-day tour: Between March / April & Oct / Nov.

Join us for 3 weeks every March/April & Oct/Nov. as we look for the special birds and other wildlife restricted to the magnificent eastern Himalayas. Bhutan is arguably the best country ever for finding these Himalayan birds because well over half the country is still covered in pristine forest. On our last tour, we found a host of tantalizing birds, including the likes of Himalayan Monal, Satyr Tragopan, Beautiful Nuthatch, Ward’s Trogon, White-bellied Heron, Ibisbill, Black-necked Crane, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Wallcreeper, Black-eared Shrike-babbler and Yellow-rumped Honeyguide. Good mammals on our last trip included Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, Golden Langur, Yellow-throated Martin and Yak. We timed our trip in March/April because this is one of the most beautiful times to be in the country, with spectacular shows of blooming rhododendrons and other flowers, spring weather and lots of birdsong. With luck, at this time of the year we might also find Black-necked Crane, if it hasn’t yet departed for Tibet. In addition to wildlife, the scenery during this tour is absolutely spectacular, with sights of grandiose snow-capped Himalayan peaks, green hillsides and stunning architecture. During our birding, we also make a little time available to visit the inside of a Dzong, to look at Tiger’s Nest Monastery precariously-positioned on a ledge high up on a cliff – and you will also be able to ask our knowledgeable local guide about the culture and history of this peaceful and quaint land.

We start the tour in the remarkable high-altitude town of Paro, where your international flight will arrive. We sample stunning mountain passes reaching 4000 m (13 000 feet), beautiful fast-flowing rivers and wonderful forests that cover vast tracts of the countryside, as we gradually travel eastwards through the country, birding almost constantly along the way. The tropical lowlands around Zhemgang are always a highlight, generating Golden Langur, Beautiful Nuthatch and other incredibly localized and sought-after animals and birds. We also bird the famed Lingmethang Road and a host of other incredible sites before eventually exiting Bhutan and flying home from Guwahati Airport in India.

We also offer optional extensions looking for 1) Red Panda within Bhutan and 2) One-horned Rhinoceros and the very rich diversity of lowland plains and wetland birds in adjacent India (before departing from Guwahati). Please e-mail kargyel@druknet.bt for any questions about upcoming birding tours.
Our trip throughout Bhutan has been the highlight of our three week adventure. Our guide Sonam and our driver are highly recommended. Our itinerary was wonderful and the company was very accommodating when we wanted to change our itinerary. Thank you Bhutan Mountain Holiday for showing us around your magnificent country and for making us feel so at home when we are so far away from home. This is a journey we will never forget and cannot wait until the day we can return.

Bhutan Mountain Holiday is definitely number one tour operator! We`re very impressed with the personal services we received in organizing the trip from the owner, Karma. He was exceedingly helpful with all his advice and guidance. We received a discount and also got a number of things included such as drinks, laundry and white water rafting which was gratefully received. Both our guide and driver were excellent and very friendly. many thanks for a superb holiday.

Karma, your responses to all our emails were amazing, we think you must never sleep, since you responded so quickly at any time of day or night! Your recommended itinerary was an excellent combination of bicycling, trekking and cultural sightseeing. We experienced so much of your wonderful country by visiting all three regions. Bhutan Mountain Holiday offers an excellent value, and we feel confident in recommending your company group or custom trips, tours, treks or bicycle travel in Bhutan.

Bhutan Mountain Holiday was the excellent choice for our 07 days (April 17th to 23th, 2011) cultural tour in Bhutan. The owner, Mr. Karma Gyeltshen arranged our entire tour. The Guide and Driver were very helpful and friendly. The Toyota Bus was new, the hotels in Paro and Thimphu very good. Therefore we highly recommend Bhutan Mountain Holiday. Thank you very much!

I traveled for a month in 2010 with Karma’s Bhutan Mountain Holiday while researching the Lonely Planet guide to Bhutan and would unreservedly recommend his company. I particularly appreciated Karma’s flexibility with the itinerary, accommodation and restaurants. Karma’s attention to detail, flexibility and efficiency was a joy to work with and the result for me was smoother travel and better research. Thanks so much.

We are most appreciative of the expertise and services rendered by Bhutan Mountain Holiday. They were the foundation of what turned out to be an amazing experience. We experienced Bhutan Mountain Holiday as very client-focused and service-driven, always interested in making it happen towards the client’s expectations and preferences. Our holidays were well organized and the recommendations provided – either upfront during the planning phase or during our stay – proved to be invaluable. Bhutan Mountain Holiday paid attention to details and gave our holidays a personal note, whether it was by the choice of guide and driver, by the personal welcome and welcome “accessories” or by the personalized itinerary. High flexibility, reliability and accessibility are how we got to know Bhutan Mountain Holiday. As an outcome, we were blessed with unique and enriching experiences during our stay in Bhutan.

Bhutan Mountain Holiday`s services is an excellent tour provider. It has all the notes to meet demands of an enjoyable holiday. It is able to meet the demands of good service. I`ve travelled to many countries and it is the first time an agency boss called to talk to the client personally to enquire about services provided by staffs. I would not hesitate to engage the agent services if I come back to Bhutan.

A very professional approach was obvious from the very beginning. Every e-questions answered clearly and precisely. The reality in the field than confirmed the competence and high-level organization. Perfection: I cannot find a single flaw. Bhutan Mountain Holiday is clearly very experienced reliable agency. The program was adopted to my personal taste and I will now need a few weeks to digest the activities and impressions of 8.5 days very filled days. Also the guide and driver were very conscientious and very helpful, they did their best to satisfy my every wish(sometimes even anticipating it). Thank you for a memorable stay in Bhutan. A new trip to Bhutan is already planned!

We had such a wonderful tour in Bhutan organized by Bhutan Mountain Holiday. Highly recommendable.
Ajay Bishwajeet and Group, Mumbai, India

It indeed was an incredible holiday in Bhutan that we will cherish for many years to come. The trip organized by BMH was beyond what we expected. What Mr. Gyeltshen, the CEO of the company said when we met him was very true (under promise and over deliver), you did that! We highly recommend Bhutan Mountain Holiday to all. We`ll see you next in 2011. Steven, Sarah and travel mates, California, USA

I first met Mr. Karma Gyeltshen(CEO, Bhutan Mountain Holiday) in 2003, when he was on his further studies in tourism in Austria. He was the first Bhutanese who responded to my request for information about his country, as I was to be a 5 month volunteer at the National Hospital in Thimphu. Despite, my many questions, Karma’s answer were patient and detailed and very useful to me in preparation. I, then, met Karma, after he returned to Thimphu and found him in person, to be the same intelligent, patient and easy to talk too. We, continue, to be friends, though, I am back in the U.S. I would recommend his services and as a trustworthy individual for your Bhutan trip without reservation. Tashi Delek.
Michael Ferdun, Honolulu, Hawaii

Sehr Gute! A very nice holiday in Bhutan set by Bhutan Mountain Holiday. The trekking part especially was the highlight of the trip. We wish you good luck and good business.
Markus / Stacy Gardner, Munich, Germany

The overall trip was fun and well-organized. The part on hotels in Wangdi and Bumthang from our trip was not so good. So better choice of hotel will be an added goodness. Otherwise it was perfect, well-informed friendly guide, good driver and new SUV.

We found that the people from Bhutan are respectful of one another, their government, their religion and their law. They have kept these values despite the pressure of modernization on their culture. Change, however is inevitable in the global world and Asia in particular. Mr. Karma and his staffs have exemplified all this and we hope they will be among the leaders in the future development of tourism in this wonderful little Kingdom.

Outstanding and exceptional. Bhutan is a very very special country and Bhutan Mountain Holiday(BMH) is a special company. BMH is focused on quality services. The hotels they arranged for us were excellent and exceeded our expectations. The guides were first class in their knowledge and their friendly ways. They made our trip hugely rewarding. The company`s fleet of vehicles were also excellent and the drivers experienced and safe. One example of the service is when we had an Indian visa problem, the company director(Karma) personally took our passports and made several visits to the Indian Embassy on our behalf and secured the necessary paper-works while we got on our enjoyed vacation ….Exceptional service! What a great company, what a fantastic country. Keep Bhutan special – We love it. Thank you for everything.

Overall my trip was excellent because of good service by your company and staff. The itinerary was very good and mixed with major sightseeing and minor ones. I especially enjoyed the hike to Shukdra Monastery(Bumthang) very much and could sit there for a while which too was very nice because I personally do not like to mix with many people. So it is nice to visit places on my own pace. Again I was quite impressed by Gonkhar Guest House (Bumthang). The way of their service was excellent. I did not expect to have such good service level and I think that I learned some points from them personally. My trip was two weeks but I felt that I was in Bhutan for a short while ago. Thank you very much for the excellent service.
Govt.’s mandated Forest Cover: 60% maintained
Protected area: 26% (marked in RED on Bhutan map above)
Neighboring countries: India to the South and China(Tibet) to the north.

Bhutan’s great range of altitude and topography produces a wide range of climatic conditions. Bhutan cane be divided into three climatic zones viz. subtropical, mid-montane and alpine.

The subtropical zone lies at an altitude of about 1800 mtrs. This zone is warm in winter with hot and humid with heavy rainfall in summer. It is distinguished by steep slopes and dense broadleaved forests.

The mid-montane zone covers areas between altitude of 1800 mtrs. and 3500 mtrs. The climate condition is more temperate with cool or cold winters, hot summers and moderate rainfalls. The region has coniferous forests on drier slopes and in the valleys. Several main valleys are dry during the monsoon expect during the monsoon.

The alpine zone lies above 3500 mtrs. Summers are short and cool with cold winters and significant snowfall. This region has tundra vegetation, alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks and glaciers.

Bhutan has a diverse 616 recorded species of birds and many more are likely to be found. This is a significant record of species for the country`s small size compared to less than 800 species in all of North America.

Forest and bush sustain a high proportion of 84% of Bhutan`s breeding birds. In addition 57% of Bhutan`s globally threatened birds and 90% of the country`s restricted birds are dependent on forests.

A total of 14 species of globally threatened birds have been identified in Bhutan by BirdLife International. These include White-bellied Heron, Palla`s Fish Eagle, Chestnut-breasted Patridge, Blyth`s Tragopan, Wood Snipe, Dark-rumped Swift, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Grey-crowned Prinia and Beautiful Nuthatch all of which probably breed in Bhutan.

A large majority of around 464 birds species are resident to Bhutan.
About 40 species are summer visitors or partial migrant to Bhutan and includes species of cuckoos, swifts, bee-eaters, flycatchers and drongos. About 50 species are known to winter in Bhutan. The species include ducks, waders, birds of prey, thrushes, finches and buntings.

Trekking in Bhutan

Cultural Heritage Trek in Central Bhutan

Introduction

The Nabji Trail is an ideal post-harvest/winter trekking set out in Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, a park with an ecological rich environment. The park, located in central Bhutan, is also home to several cultural rich agricultural villages. The trail is a six-day low-altitude trek (between 693m/23100ft and 1,636m/5453ft) through six different villages located inside the park. Starting point Riotala (1060m/3533ft) and final destination Tongtongphey (1061m/3537ft) are two small villages along the Trongsa-Zhemgang road, situated in the buffer area of the park at the east side of the Mangde Chhu (river).

On this trek, you will possibly see the Golden Langur (Trachypithecus geei), one of the rarest primates, which can only be found in Bhutan and neighbouring Assam. Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park is also home to the endangered Rufous-necked Hornbill (Aceros nepalensis). More so, the trail is a superb place for birding (common mynas, blue-fronted redstarts, long-tailed shrikes and Eurasian sparrows, to name just a few common species, but spotted are also serpent eagle, golden-throated barbet, and the yellow-bellied flowerpecker) and has a wide variety of plants and flowers found in this Himalayan area (from Chir Pine, broad-leaved trees and Bamboo, to Rhododendrons and wild Orchids).

Besides the natural beauty of the area, the area also contains cultural history, witnessed among others by the presence of a commemorative pillar in the temple of Nabji. The pillar symbolises the occasion that peace was negotiated between the two kings (King Nauche from India and King Sindu from Bhutan) intermediated by Guru Rimpoche in the eight century. Along the six day trail more traces of Guru Rimpoche’s presence during those days can be found.

The last two days of the trek will go through the homeland of the Monpa people. The small traditional villages of the Monpa community are scattered on the slope overlooking Mangde Chhu. The Monpas are thought to be the first settlers in Bhutan, the Mangde Chhu valley representing one of the earliest areas of settlement in Bhutan. The Monpas practice a mix of animistic shamanism and Buddhism. Monpa refers to “the people of darkness” referring to their isolated position in the past. In general term Mon refers to people without religion that symbolises period before the advent of Buddhism in Bhutan. They were originally hunters and food gatherers and their culture, tradition and practices are intrinsically linked to the forest around them. They are traditionally cane weavers and bamboo crafters, using their skills for house construction, making baskets and other household items.

Community Tourism

The Nabji Trail supports the park management in their efforts to conserve nature by creating more awareness on natural and environmental issues, through tourism awareness programmes and by introducing socio-economic benefits out of tourism. Specific measures are put in place to maximise socio-economic benefits and minimize negative impacts from tourism development to support the livelihood of the local community in the area and to create more awareness on natural, environmental, and cultural issues.

The trail itself has been in use since long by the villagers themselves, who use the trail to commute between villages. A waste management system has been put in place where tour groups have to carry their non-degradable waste out of the park. Waste can be disposed of at the end of the trail, at the Park Range Office in Tongtongfey, where an incinerator is build. This incinerator is not only for the benefit of tour groups but also the local community.

The trail has been developed in such a way that community will have the sole responsibility to manage and provide services. The service package includes community camping sites with basic facilities (Nimshong, Korphu, Kubdra and Jangbi) or with bucket shower/hot stone bath facilities (Nabji), local lunches, tea or meal. The rates for these services are standardised to avoid misunderstanding between communities and the tour operators and tour groups. Each village has a Tourism Management Committee (TMC), as appointed by the villagers. The TMC will monitor and control the services, revenue collection and utilization through the Community Development Fund (CDF). The revenue so generated will go directly into CDF bank account.

On rotation basis, individuals from different villages generate income through portering from village to village, assisting as cook, or village guide. Other activities generating income for individuals by developing tourism in JSWNP include cultural performances, sales of crafts, vegetables and other agricultural products. The TMC decides the deposit on certain percentage of the revenue generated from the individual tourism activities such as portering, guiding and cooking into the CDF bank account. The accumulated fund can be used by the communities for their village development activities, children education and expansion, conservation activities and maintenance of the tourism related infrastructure. The fund can be used to support initiatives which involve those who are not directly involved in tourism development (especially children and elderly).

Accessibility

The Nabji Trail was officially opened on 20th November 2006. Best time to visit the area is from October to March and bookings can be made through a Bhutanese tour operator. A maximum number of 11 people per tour group are allowed on the trek (incl. the FTO tour guide if any). The community will offer a service package that includes campsite, porters, village guides and cooks. Others services and products offered are cultural programs, handicraft made out of cane and bamboo, vegetables and firewood. All campsites have more or less the same basic facilities such as camping ground, toilets, kitchen and a mini theatre for dining purposes and cultural performances, only Nabji campsite will have the option for hot stone bath.

The trail’s start and end is located at the road between Trongsa and Zhemgang. Therefore Trongsa is a good ‘base camp’ to start the trek. Not only because of its close distance from start and finish of the trail, its accommodation facilities, and its perfect location between Punakha and Bumthang, but also because of possible visits to Trongsa Dzong and its Ta Dzong (a watch tower which will be converted into museum). Kuenga Rabten, the old winter palace, can be visited along the way to or from the park.

ITENARY

Day 1: Tongtongphey(1,000m)- Jangbi( 1,350m), circa 3 hours
After furnishing yourself with ample information about the trek from the information booth at the Park Range office in Tongtongfey, the Jangbi village guide steers you down to the Mangdi river where you cross a suspension bridge. The first day brings you in contact with the Monpas who are believed to be the first inhabitants of Bhutan. A glimpse on their lifestyle further validates their ethnicity, coupled by mythical legends about their origins. The campsite in Jangbi stands on the valley sill, which offers a resplendent view of the Mangdi valley.

Day 2: Jangbi(1,350m) – Kudra(1,500m), circa 6 hours
The morning allows you to further interact with the Monpas. Before you proceed, you could pay a visit to the orchid garden till your thirst for botanical photography gets satiated. The hike to Kudra provides a nuance of jovial atmosphere because this part of the trail meanders along stone imprints of Guru Rinpoche’s footprints, dagger and phallus, festooned by stories that espouse Guru’s praxis. Lunch is served just before you reach Ugyendra, a steep cliff below Phrumzur, one of the few villages of the Monpa communities scattered around the trail. With renewed energy from lunch, you could visit the village lhakhang and then proceed to the campsite in Kudra.

Day 3: Kudra(1,500m) – Nabji(1,300m); circa 6 hours
You wake up with the distant call of the Rufous-necked hornbill. This part of the trek is a collage of streams, waterfalls and thick forests that will give you an invigorating feeling of being out in the wild. The Great Himalayan Squirrel, Rhesus Mecaques, and small snakes are often spotted along the trail. Unseen but present, are Himalayan black bear, Red pandas, tigers, Clouded leopards and many more. Upon arrival at the holy tree in Nabji, the people will give you a heartwarming reception. Nabji is a beautiful village with endless paddy fields demarcating the valley and surrounding the campsite.

Day 4: Nabji village (1,300m)- Korphu(1,500m), circa 3 hours
En route to Korphu, the Nabji temple is located in the middle of the paddy fields. Inside, there remains a stone pillar on which Guru Rinpoche, while traveling through Bhutan in the 8th century, brought consensus between two warring kings: King sindha Gyelp of Bumthang, and King Noeche, by imprinting their thumbs on each side of the stone. Korphu is situated on a mountaintop at an altitude of 1,500m. The most striking thing about Korphu is that the people exemplify hospitality almost treating you like ‘A King on accession to throne’. You have the option of being welcomed with a traditional ‘Chipdrel’ procession and a ‘Marchang’ ceremony, singing traditional songs of praise and wellbeing for new visitors. They also perform the traditional ‘Tashi Labey’ dance to bid you farewell. If you are interested, you can participate in the quintessential Bhutanese games of ‘Khuru’, ‘Dego’, ‘Sok-sum’, and ‘Gee-dum’, all on the brink of disappearance. You could also pay a visit to the village temple that houses the sacred relics of Pema Lingpa, the famous ‘Treasure revealer’ of Bhutan. The village campsite provides a spectacular bird’s-eye view of Nabji and surrounding areas.

Day 5: Korphu (1,500m) – Nyimshong ( 1,300m), circa 5 hours
The hike from Korphu to Nyimshong is pleasant and arguably the best birding spot which can boast a bird list of more than 395 species, with among others the elusive Rufous Necked Hornbill who has its nesting holes adjacent to the trail. The walk is mixed with waterfalls and, streams and cantilever bridges. The evening brings you to Nyimshong, a village with its reticent architecture and lifestyle. The women of Nyimshong have a penchant for singing and dancing and a cultural show would be ideal to express certain euphoria to end your trek. Of course this is optional.

Day 6: Nyimshong (1,300m) – Reotala (1000m), circa 3 hours
If you are lucky, the Golden langurs will lead you to the exit. Your descend down to the Mangdi river again to see some herons and River-lapwings. An hour’s steep ascend to the road and your driver will drive you back to Trongsa.
